REDUCING YOUR DEBT LOAD

Review your fixed budget items and look for areas to save money. This sounds so basic but is often overlooked.

When is the last time you reviewed your auto insurance ?

I recently saved $200/ year by increasing my deductible from $500 to $1000.

This applies to homeowner's insurance as well...

When I checked with my agent, I found savings for an increased deductible, being over 55, and having good credit. Other items which save money include alarm systems or other safety equipment. They have lists of special items that can save you money but you have to call and ask!

Is your cell phone bill the most competitive? Are you taking advantage of all specials? When new programs appear, you have to check to see if you are eligible.

Have you looked at your cable bill? Do you really need 1000 channels?

Look at your heating bill. Natural gas prices have dropped in the last 7 months. Most companies offer programs to lock in low rates now.

I saved $70 a month during the winter by just locking in the lower rates.

Use store and manufacturer coupons for specials and basics that you use all of the time. You can easily save $50 a month for cereal, soups, paper goods and home care products.

Sit down today and write down all of your fixed budget items.
Include everything you can possibly think of. Review your list carefully and evaluate which items offer possible savings.
